Brief History (past to present)

ASBC College — A Brief History:

Alhaz Sunai Bibi Choudhury College, popularly known as ASBC College, is a rural higher education institution located in Udali Gaon near Lanka, Hojai District, Assam. It was established with the fundamental aim of extending quality higher education to students from underserved and socio-economically backward communities, particularly those in and around Udali and neighbouring regions. Throughout its history, the college has remained committed to academic growth, social empowerment, and cultural enrichment.
The college was founded in the late 20th century as a response to the pressing need for accessible higher education in a region where such opportunities were limited. Since its inception, ASBC College has worked to break barriers of distance, poverty, and social marginalisation by offering undergraduate degree programmes, primarily in the Arts stream. Over the years, the institution has nurtured a culture of learning that integrates academic knowledge with ethical values and community consciousness.
From the outset, the founders and subsequent governing bodies envisioned ASBC College as more than just a site of academic instruction. Their goal was to create an inclusive space where students from diverse backgrounds could grow intellectually, socially, and personally. The emphasis on education for rural youth, particularly from minority and economically disadvantaged families, has been a defining characteristic of the college’s mission. Inclusivity and educational empowerment continue to guide institutional policies, student outreach, and curricular developments.
Affiliated with Gauhati University, one of Assam’s premier universities and recently to Rabindranath Tagore University, ASBC College adheres to the academic standards and syllabus framework prescribed by the university. This affiliation ensures that students receive recognised degrees and academic credentials that are valued across the region and beyond. In alignment with its affiliation, the college continually updates its academic programmes to reflect evolving educational needs and regulatory requirements.
The institutional journey of ASBC College includes growth in both infrastructure and academic offerings. Although starting with classical undergraduate courses, the college has progressively enhanced its facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, a library, and sports areas. Extracurricular and cultural activities have also been woven into campus life, through annual events, competitive sports, and student clubs that help develop leadership, teamwork, and creative expression among students.
The Alumni Association of ASBC College plays an active role in the life of the institution. Alumni frequently return to participate in cultural programmes, mentor current students, and contribute to community development initiatives. This strong alumni-college connection reaffirms the institution’s influence far beyond graduation, shaping professional and civic lives across Assam and neighbouring regions.
In keeping with its mission, the college places importance on values-based education, cultural understanding, and social responsibility. Over the decades, ASBC College has built a reputation for resilience, adaptability, and community orientation. Its commitment to expanding access to education in a rural setting continues to uplift countless students, making it a significant contributor to Assam’s educational landscape.
